Police dog used to subdue Mystic man

Norwich — A police dog was used early this morning to subdue a Mystic man who police said crashed his truck into a utility pole, fled the scene of the crash on foot and led police on a chase through the woods.

Sean P. Cardin, 23, of 489 Cow Hill Road, Mystic, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, evading responsibility, failure to drive right and interfering with a police officer.

Police said Cardin was driving east in his truck on Route 2 near the Norwich-Preston town line and went off the roadway and struck a utility pole. They alleged he then fled on foot and was located approximately one mile east hiding in thick swamp grass.

State police used Blaze, a police canine, to subdue Cardin and Norwich police assisted in the search. Cardin was taken to the William W. Backus Hospital for treatment of a dog bite and minor injuries he sustained in the crash, police said.

Cardin was held on a $5,000 bond pending his arraignment. He is scheduled to appear July 19 in Norwich Superior Court.
