Scooters stolen from Groton Long Point

Groton – Police say two motor scooters were stolen from Groton Long Point during the overnight hours Tuesday, and the suspect in the thefts may be driving a large, seat-less commuter van.

Police said between 6 p.m. Tuesday and 6 a.m. Wednesday, a black 1991 Yamaha XC125 Motor Scooter, valued at $300, was stolen from a Crescent Street location, while a red and white 2008 Honda CHF508 "Metropolitan" Motor Scooter, valued at $1,000, was stolen from Atlantic Avenue. The thefts might be linked to similar incidents throughout the region, Groton Long Point police said.

Police encourage owners of scooters to keep them indoors when unused, to use commercial locking devices and to remove the ignition keys. Police also recommend that residents take photos of their scooters. The scooters are of interest to thieves, police said, because many are unregistered and because of their compact size and portability.

Police described the vehicle of interest in the case as a large, 15-person commuter van, possibly a Ford, which may not have seats inside of it. Anyone with information is asked to call Groton Long Point police at 860-536-4921.
