Police: Westerly man threatens ex-girlfriend with gun and knife

North Stonington — A Westerly man was arrested Wednesday night after police said he threatened his ex-girlfriend with a gun and knife and shot at her male companion.

Michael Bailey, 48, of 14 Harrison Road was charged with criminal attempt to commit murder, unlawful discharge of a firearm, carrying a firearm while under the influence, carrying a rifle in a motor vehicle, first-degree reckless endangerment, second-degree unlawful restraint, second-degree criminal mischief, two counts of threatening and two counts of breach of peace.

Police said at 6:54 p.m., the ex-girlfriend and the male companion went to the North Stonington resident state trooper’s office to file a formal complaint against Bailey.

The woman said that Bailey sent her a series of threatening text messages and then arrived at a North Stonington residence to confront her.

The woman told police that Bailey shot out the tires of her vehicle with a long gun before attempting to shoot the male companion as he fled the residence.

Police said that Bailey also threatened the woman with a knife. An altercation ensued, and Bailey fled the scene before police arrived.

He was arrested several hours later without incident and was held in lieu of a $1 million bond pending his arraignment Thursday in New London Superior Court.
