Norwich – Police arrested a city man this morning after he allegedly tried to use a stolen credit card at a business and then fought with responding officers, injuring two.

After the 11 a.m. incident, police charged Jamaal D. Hairston, 30, of 53 Peck St. with two counts of assault on a police officer, escape from custody, criminal attempted illegal use of a credit card, interfering with an officer and second-degree breach of peace.

Police said the proprietor of a local business called police after recognizing Hairston, who the proprietor said had used a stolen credit card in the store earlier this week. Police said Hairston was cooperative until he was placed under arrest, at which point he tried to flee. When that failed, he violently fought with officers throughout the aisles of the store, police said, falling onto displays and sending products crashing to the floor. Other customers called 911 to summon more officers, police said.

Police said one officer sustained cuts to his arm while another suffered a broken finger and is expected to be out of work for some time.

Hairston was held in lieu of a $50,000 bond and is scheduled to appear Thursday in Norwich Superior Court.
