Ledyard – Police are warning residents to be mindful of mail scams after a resident reported she has received two such offers in a year.

Ledyard police said the victim reported Monday that they received a letter from USA Mega Draw claiming she had won $150,000. Included in the letter was a check for $4,200, which the victim was to use to help pay a processing fee of $3,200 to receive the $150,000.

If the victim had cashed the check, which police said is written fraudulently, it would have bounced, leaving the victim responsible for paying off the money. Police said no one should participate in any scenario in which funds are requested from you in exchange for larger winnings.
