Firefighters extricate driver after Waterford Speedbowl crash

Waterford – A Columbia driver was taken Wednesday to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital after a crash into the wall during a race at the Waterford Speedbowl.

Eric Finkbein suffered non-life threatening injuries in the crash on lap 18 of a 20 lap race in the Super-X Car division, track spokesman Brian Darling said.

All races were stopped as the Cohanzie Fire Department, which provides track safety services, worked for about 10 minutes to extricate Finkbein from his vehicle. Cohanzie Fire Chief John Mariano said that after the 7:40 p.m. wreck, the department called for its rescue truck and an ambulance as a precaution, in addition to the on-scene personnel.

“It was the worst wreck at the track this year,” Mariano said. “Things went smoothly.”

Darling said Finkbein was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure.

Mariano said the track has a contract with the department to pay for its rescue services.
