Mashantucket — William Dittman, the former New London police captain, has been named permanent chief of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Police Department.

Dittman, who has been the tribal department's acting chief since July, was chosen from "a list of candidates," the tribe announced in a statement.

"Chief Dittman has proven himself in his role as interim chief of police and we feel that he is the right man for the job and that he will continue to be a great asset to the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation," said Rodney Butler, chairman of the tribal council.

Dittman retired in January after 35 years with the New London Police Department. Prior to being named interim chief of the tribal police, he worked for the State's Attorney's Office.

Dittman has a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and law enforcement administration, and a master's degree in public administration from the University of New Haven. Born and raised in New London, he lives with his family in Pawcatuck.

"I am honored to have been selected as the permanent chief of police, and am unwavering in my continuing commitment to provide the highest level of law enforcement possible to the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation — its citizens, employees and patrons." Dittman said.
