Stonington police charge one youth, look for another following 4 a.m. chase

Mystic  — Stonington Police charged a youth who jumped in the Mystic River to escape them and are looking for another in connection with the theft of a vehicle from Groton early this morning.

According to Stonington police Capt.  Jerry Desmond, an officer spotted two suspicious vehicles behind the Ocean Community YMCA about 4 a.m. When the officer drove up, one of them quickly drove away and the officer followed. The vehicle stopped behind the Mystic Fire Department and the two male occupants fled.  One jumped in the shallow water near the railroad bridge. Boats from the Mystic Fire Department, Coast Guard and Groton Town police department all responded as did a police dog.

A short time later police apprehended a wet juvenile male riding a bicycle down Route 27. The youth was charged with interfering with a police officer and referred to juvenile court.

Desmond said police are following up leads as they try to locate the driver of the stolen car.
