Groton — A former Massachusetts man who recently completed a federal prison sentence for committing seven robberies in Rhode Island faces new charges connected to a 2007 bank robbery in Groton.

David R. Cahill, 36, was arrested Friday on charges linked to a June 11, 2007, robbery at the Citizens Bank on Long Hill Road. Police said Cahill passed a note to a teller implying that he had a weapon and demanded money.

Cahill has been in prison since 2008, when he was sentenced to 63 months in federal prison for committing a string of robberies at banks and drug stores in Rhode Island. Cahill committed robberies at two banks for cash and five at drug stores where he stole oxycodone at gunpoint, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Rhode Island.

Cahill told police he committed the crimes because he was addicted to oxycodone and in debt to his drug supplier.   

Groton Police Lt. John Varone said Cahill’s initial arrest in 2008 was the result of a joint investigation by Groton police detectives working with the FBI and law enforcement agencies from Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

At the time, Cahill was a suspect in robberies in all three states.

Cahill finished his sentence on Nov. 23 in New Jersey and was immediately taken into custody by New Jersey State Police, pending his extradition to Connecticut on the Groton charges, Varone said.

Cahill waived extradition on Nov. 23 and was picked up by Groton police detectives on Friday. Held over the weekend on a $150,000 bond, he was arraigned Monday in New London Superior Court. He is charged with first-degree robbery and third-degree larceny in the Groton robbery. Cahill’s case was continued to Dec. 18 and transferred to  New London’s Part A court for serious felonies.
