Police say Montville man wielding machete tried to break into home

Montville — Police say a local man wielding a machete attempted to break into a home on Route 32 Friday.

Phillberto Santana Rodriguez, 22, of 1937 Route 32, Montville, was charged Friday with carrying a dangerous weapon, threatening and breach of peace.

Around 6:49 p.m., police responded a home at 1927 Route 32 for a report of a male with a machete attempting to gain access.

When police arrived, they saw Rodriguez holding the machete down by his leg and instructed him to drop it. According to the police report, Rodriguez dropped the machete only after police told him several times. Once he complied, he was placed in handcuffs.

During the ordeal, Montville police also restrained a "defiant and hysterical female" who was related to Rodriguez, the report states.

Because the woman was making suicidal threats, she was transported to William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich for a psychiatric evaluation.

There were no injuries, police said. Rodriguez is scheduled to appear in Norwich Superior Court on Monday.
