    Groton home damaged in blaze

Groton — A basement fire at 141 Poquonnock Road displaced four people from their home late Tuesday night.

City of Groton Firefighter Dan Tompkins said the fire was reported at 10:50 p.m. When fire crews arrived at the scene, they encountered a heavy smoke condition throughout the entire home and fire in the basement.

Tompkins said firefighters contained the blaze to the basement, but the rest of the home sustained smoke and heat damage.

Two occupants were treated at the scene for possible smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported.

In addition to the city, fire departments from Electric Boat, the Submarine Base, Poquonnock Bridge, Mystic and Old Mystic also responded.

The American Red Cross was called in to assist the displaced residents.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
