Groton police, fire rescue man who fell in water

Groton – A man walking Friday beside the train tracks behind Bridge Street slipped on gravel and fell into a standing pool of water, police said.

The man, who was in his late 30s, appeared to be intoxicated, said Sgt. Jad Bickford of the Groton City Police Department. The man was taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, Bickford said, and possibly hypothermia. By the time the man was put in the ambulance around 5:30 p.m., the temperature was around 25 degrees.

Bickford said the man and a friend were walking along the train tracks underneath the Interstate 95 northbound overpass at exit 85 when the man slipped on gravel and fell into the shallow water. His friend ran to the Bridge Package Store and had an employee call police around 4:49 p.m.

Police and fire personnel accessed the tracks behind Ferguson Waterworks at 86 Bridge St. and pulled the man from the water, Bickford said. Train traffic was delayed, Bickford said, and as the man was wheeled into the waiting ambulance, a train sped by at 5:34 p.m.

The man appeared to have suffered non-life threatening injuries, Bickford said. An Amtrak police officer on scene would not say if the men would be charged with trespassing. The track area is under Amtrak jurisdiction.
