Ocean Community YMCA employee charged with possession of child pornography

Westerly — Rhode Island State Police arrested a Westerly man Thursday on possession of child pornography charges.

Dana G. Gingerelli, 20, of 12 Canton St. was charged with possession of child pornography and transfer of child pornography. At the time of the 8:30 a.m. arrest, Gingerelli was an employee at the Ocean Community YMCA in Westerly. He no longer works at the 95 High St. location.

In an email, YMCA CEO and President Maureen Fitzgerald alerted YMCA members to the allegations against Gingerelli.

“Please know that we have no reason to believe your child, or any child at the YMCA was involved in any incidents with this individual, but we want to make every effort to find out if there may have been any incidents,” the email reads. “Because of the nature of the allegations and charges, we are notifying all members who may have had the opportunity to come in contact with or who may have had an opportunity for inappropriate interaction with this former staff member. Safety is our primary concern; however we continue to review for possible areas of improvement.”

State police allege Gingerelli shared child pornography images on the Internet, and a search warrant executed at his home Thursday morning turned up a smartphone containing the images.

Gingerelli was processed at the Hope Valley barracks and arraigned in 4th Division District Court. He was released on $10,000 bond, with the conditions he doesn’t use the Internet or come in contact with children under age 18.

Police said Gingerelli formerly worked at Camp Harrington, a YMCA organization in Boylston, Mass.

The investigation is ongoing, police said, and task force members are working to find the source of the images and learn the identity of the child.
