Norwich — A portion of Washington Street has reopened after a car struck a utility pole, causing the closure of the roadway for several hours.

The accident happened shortly after 1:30 a.m., police said. Wires and the pole had fallen across the vehicle, which trapped the driver inside until utility crews could safely remove them.

Washington Street in the area of Town Street was closed while crews repaired the pole.

The unidentified driver was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
