RV burns, forces shut down of Route 11 in Salem

Salem – A section of northbound Route 11 was shut down for about an hour Wednesday as firefighters worked to extinguish a burning motor home.

Salem Fire Chief Gene Maiorano said firefighters arrived at about 11:15 a.m. to find the nearly 40-foot RV fully involved in flames on the shoulder of the highway between exits 5 and 6. The two occupants of the RV had escaped unharmed.

Firefighters from Salem, Gardner Lake and Colchester fire departments spent nearly two hours extinguishing the flames and clearing debris from the highway. Oakdale Fire Department assisted with a tanker.

The cause of the fire is under investigation but appears to be mechanical in nature, Maiorano said.
