Accident temporarily knocks out power in Stonington

Stonington — Power was knocked out to a large section of Pawcatuck early this morning and a portion of Pequot Trail was temporarily closed after an SUV driven by a woman, who police say was intoxicated, struck a utility pole.

Erin D. Shellman, 43, of 168 Pequot Trail was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, using a cell phone while driving, distracted driving while committing a moving violation and failure to drive right after the 11:36 p.m. crash Sunday night. She was released on a $600 non-surety bond and is slated to appear in New London Superior Court on May 21.

Police said she was driving east on Pequot Trail when her Toyota 4Runner struck the pole and box containing telephone equipment near the intersection of Wheeler Drive. Shellman declined medical treatment. Power was restored and the road reopened later in the morning.
