    Troopers, officers honored

Local troopers and police officers were honored Monday during a semi-annual ceremony to recognize those who demonstrate bravery and outstanding service in the line of duty.

Among the many recipients from troopers across eastern Connecticut was a group from Troop E in Montville who on Sept. 4 captured the suspect in a fatal Jewett City stabbing. Jeffrey Savoy was taken into custody after a violent struggle with police and later charged in the stabbing death of his brother.

Awarded the Medal for Meritorious Service for the arrest were state police Lt. Samuel Izzarelli, Sgt. Christopher High, Trooper James Collins, Trooper David Hayes and Trooper Greg Hunter.

Trooper Timothy Bettencourt, from Troop E in Montville, was awarded the Medal for Lifesaving for pulling an unconscious woman from a burning vehicle on Aug. 11 after a crash on Interstate 395 in Norwich.

Old Lyme Resident State Trooper Gary Inglis and Montville Officer Gregg Jacobson each earned a medal for outstanding service.

Inglis took the lead in investigating a crime spree involving a spate of residential burglaries and tracked down a suspect who was caught in the act of selling stolen jewelry.

In July, Jacobson pursued and caught a man later charged in the theft of a firearm from a Salem home.

The arrests led to further investigation and the recovery of more than $200,000 worth of stolen property. As a result, police said they solved 13 burglaries and three larcenies in cases spanning six towns, four jurisdictions and three states. Troop K in Colchester earned a unit citation for their work.
