Ledyard — A member of Harvard University’s heavyweight crew team is expected to be arraigned Wednesday in New London Superior Court on charges that he allegedly stole streets signs in Gales Ferry.

William Hakim, 21, of Belmont, Mass., was charged early Monday with second-degree criminal mischief and sixth-degree larceny.

Police said that at 1:51 a.m. they received a report from a Gales Ferry resident that individuals were stealing street signs on Military Highway and that a minor altercation had occurred when the resident confronted the individuals.

Police also arrested Lachlan Macintosh who is the brother of another crew member. Macintosh, 21, of British Columbia, Canada, was charged with second-degree criminal mischief, sixth-degree larceny and breach of peace.

Ledyard police responded and when they arrived Macintosh jumped into the Thames River.

As a result, Ledyard police requested assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard, Submarine Base police department and state police.

A short time later, Macintosh was found just off Military Highway, police said.

Macintosh is scheduled to appear in court on July 12.

Coach Harry Parker and Harvard officials from Athletic Communications could not be reached for comment.

Hakim is a junior coxswain. Harvard defeated Yale Sunday in the 148th running of the Yale-Harvard Regatta on the Thames River. The Harvard team’s clubhouse, called Red Top, is in Gales Ferry.
