East Lyme — A Niantic man was arrested on June 3 after police said he stole eight sets of silver Tiffany & Co. flatware and then pawned them at a local shop.

Nicholas Phaneuf-Micanovic, 36, of 25 Ocean Ave., Apt. 27, was charged with second-degree burglary, third-degree larceny and possession of a controlled substance.

Police said at about 8:50 a.m. they were dispatched to Old Black Point Road for a burglary that had just occurred at a home.

The homeowner and the housekeeper were in the residence at the time of the burglary. They told police that they saw a white male exit an exterior door. The burglar was wearing a white T-shirt with the letter "G" on it.

The housekeeper also told police that a short time after seeing the man, she saw a red sedan speeding on Old Black Point Road.

The homeowner said she recently hired a painting company. When police went to the painting company in Niantic, they learned that Phaneuf-Micanovic drives a red Cadillac sedan and saw that he was wearing a T-shirt with the letter "G" on it.

Phaneuf-Micanovic initially denied being at the residence but later said he went there to retrieve some tools. Police found him in possession of marijuana and after searching his person they found a receipt from Gold Star Pawn in Groton, which said he pawned the silver flatware.

Phaneuf-Micanovic is out on a $10,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in New London Superior Court.
