Couple killed in head-on collision on Route 2 in Preston

Preston — A Lebanon couple was killed in a head-on collision Friday afternoon on Route 2 near the intersection of Hewitt Road.

Mildred Tyler, 63, and William Tyler, 64, both of 150 Scott Hill Road, Lebanon, died in a crash at about 5:30 p.m. after the car they were driving was hit by 57-year-old Thomas Flaherty of Willimantic. Flaherty was taken to The William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich, where he was treated for injuries that were not considered life-threatening, according to state police in Montville.

Flaherty was listed in fair condition at Backus Saturday evening.

Flaherty’s 2010 GMC Sierra was traveling west on Route 2 when it crossed the solid double yellow line into the path of the Tylers’ 2012 Honda CRV, police said. Both Tylers were trapped in the car, police said. Mildred Tyler, who was driving, died at the scene. William Tyler, the front seat passenger, was taken to Backus, where he later died. Police said both were wearing seat belts.

The accident is under investigation. Police are asking anyone with information to call Trooper Matthew Belz at Troop E in Montville at (860) 848-6511 ext. 5056.
