Stubborn stump pile burns in North Stonington

North Stonington — A large pile of stumps was expected to burn into the night Tuesday at a private gravel bank off Button Road.

North Stonington Fire Chief Charles A. Steinhart V said a fire was reported at 6:40 p.m. at the Suchocki Sand and Gravel Pit, where a controlled burn inadvertently spread to the stump pile.

Firefighters spent more than two hours at the site wetting down the area to ensure the fire did not spread and at one point calling on a tanker for extra water from Preston. Old Mystic was called in to cover the North Stonington station.

Steinhart said personnel at the site of the fire were expected to keep an eye on the stump pile and fire crews would check in on it Wednesday morning.
