Norwich police charge suspected heroin dealer who rammed cruiser

Norwich – Police have lodged charges against the Hartford man who police said rammed a police cruiser before leading police on a 32-mile, multi-town chase last week.

Jose L. Cordero, 27, of Hartford, was caught by police in Glocester, R.I., on Sept. 12 after fleeing a motor vehicle stop in Norwich. Police said he had pulled into the Norwichtown commuter parking lot to make a delivery of heroin.

During his escape, Cordero rammed the police vehicle, sped out of the parking lot and struck two other vehicles while heading down West Town Street, police said. Cordero headed north on Interstate 395, where he accelerated to speeds in excess of 100 mph.

The chase was picked up by state police until Cordero entered Rhode Island. He eventually surrendered to Glocester Police and has been held at the Adult Correctional Institution in Cranston, R.I., as a fugitive from justice.

On Tuesday, Norwich police served a warrant charging Cordero with criminal attempt to sell heroin, engaging an officer in pursuit, driving with a suspended license, first-degree reckless endangerment and first-degree criminal mischief.

Cordero was held in lieu of a $250,000 court set bond and is scheduled to appear Wednesday in Norwich Superior Court.
