New York man killed in I-395 crash in Waterford

Waterford — Police said a Brooklyn, N.Y., man was killed Sunday night in a three-car accident on Interstate 395 South near Exit 77.

Police said Calvin Kim, 44, was traveling south on I-395 when his BMW 328 struck a deer and became disabled in the left lane. Police said Kim did not have his hazard lights turned on.

A second vehicle driven by Michael Pinkerton of Waterford stopped in the left lane 50 feet south of where Kim’s car was stopped. Police said Pinkerton exited his car, walked toward Kim and told him to turn his hazard lights on so that oncoming vehicles could see the car.

Police said that Kim, who was not in his car, returned to his vehicle and opened the driver’s side door and reached inside to turn on the lights.

During this time, Yuxian Miao, 42, of Elmhurst, N.Y., was driving a Mercedes-Benz in the left lane. Police said that Miao saw Kim’s car at the last minute and attempted to swerve to the right to avoid hitting the car. Police said Miao struck the rear of Kim’s car, pushing it into Kim. Police said that Kim was thrown into the median.

Miao’s car continued to move south, pushing Kim’s car into the rear of Pinkerton’s car. The accident happened at about 7:45 p.m.

Police said that Kim was taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, where he later died of his injuries.

The accident remains under investigation. Anyone who may have witnessed the accident is asked to call Troop E in Montville at (860) 848-6500.
