Oct. 1 crash damaged state police cars, injured troopers

Norwich — Two state police patrol vehicles sustained severe damage and two troopers were taken to the hospital following an Oct. 1 crash on Interstate 395 in Norwich, according to a state police accident information report.

The report, which was provided Tuesday by state police, indicates that one cruiser was traveling with lights and sirens southbound on I-395 while protecting a slow-moving highway construction project in the left lane. A second southbound police cruiser, operated by Trooper Kristina Vivino, struck the rear of the first cruiser. The accident occurred at 11 p.m. south of the Exit 81 on ramp.

One car sustained major rear-end damage while the second sustained severe damage to the entire front end, according to the report. Vivino and Trooper Kalen Brown, whose vehicle was rear-ended, were transported by state police to The William W. Backus Hospital for evaluation of back and neck pain. Both troopers were on duty at the time of the crash.

Police said the accident was under investigation.
