Police chiefs from Stonington, Groton Town honored for domestic violence work

Stonington Police Chief Darren Stewart and Groton Town Police Chief Michael Crowley were among the 100 men who were honored by the Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence this week for their work on behalf of domestic violence victims.

Police supervisors and a physician from the region were among the 100 men who received the honor at the organization's First 100 Plus breakfast event in Cromwell Tuesday morning. The men from southeastern Connecticut were nominated by Safe Futures, the New London agency that supports domestic violence victims in the region.

"They have always encouraged officers and advocates to work together as a team to better serve victims," said Katherine Verano, Safe Futures' supervisor of victim advocates.

Groton Town Police recently signed on to a Lethality Assessment Program in which officers responding to domestic violence calls ask the victims in serious and repeat cases 11 questions to determine if they are at risk of being killer. If the victims are deemed to be in danger, the police immediately put them in touch with Safe Futures.

Stonington Police supervisors recently underwent training in the Lethality Assessment Program with the hope that they may start the program in the near future, Verano said.
