U.S.G.S. confirms there were two earthquakes on Friday
The U.S. Geological Survey has now confirmed that eastern Connecticut experienced two earthquakes on Friday.
Updated information on the U.S.G.S. website Tuesday indicated the first earthquake, a 2.1 magnitude, occurred at 9:05 a.m. and was centered about 2 miles east of Conning Towers-Nautilus Park, or 41.383°N 72.028°W in Groton.
A magnitude 2.2 earthquake occurred at 9:42 a.m. and was located 1 kilometer northeast of Ledyard Center, at 41.452°N 72.002°W, according to the U.S.G.S. website.
The booms associated with the quakes led to numerous reports of explosions across the region. The Weston Observatory, an earthquake research arm of Boston College, had also recorded the two earthquakes.
