New London police arrest suspected burglar near scene

New London — Police apprehended a burglary suspect with broken glass in his hair not far from the California Fruit store, where an alarm sounded shortly after midnight.

Deputy Chief Peter Reichard said in a press release that a patrol officer heard an audible alarm at about 12:39 a.m. Tuesday in the area of Huntington Street. The officer discovered the alarm was coming from the California Fruit store at 98 Huntington St.

The officer found the front window broken and immediately saw a man walking a short distance away toward Federal Street, according to a press release.

The officer stopped the man, Germaine Carter, 34, of 54 Mountain Ave., who had a laceration on his head and glass fragments in his hair, the release states.

Carter was wearing one glove, police said. Officers found a matching glove and several packs of cigarettes between where Carter was stopped and the broken store window, police said.

Police said they found that cigarettes of the same brand were missing from the store.

Carter was arrested and then taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital for treatment of his injury. He was charged with third-degree burglary, sixth-degree larceny and second-degree criminal mischief. He was held in lieu of a $50,000 bond and was to be arraigned Tuesday in New London Superior Court.
