Waterford — Firefighters and police on Wednesday rescued a dog from Alewife Cove near East Neck Road after it had fallen through the ice and was unable to get out of the water.

At about 2:50 p.m. police were dispatched to the area 19 East Neck Road, where they found the stranded dog. Waterford Fire Engine Company 1 along with the Jordan and Goshen fire departments were also dispatched to the scene.

Police Officers Todd O'Connell and Matt Fedor commandeered a boat and gave it to the Waterford Fire Department.

Donning cold water rescue suits, firefighters Bob Swanson and Jake Reagan entered the frigid waters. The pair were also tethered to a safety line as they walked with the boat towards the dog.

Fire officials said the dog was tired, but calm enough to be placed safely into the boat. The canine was turned over to an animal control officer from New London, who transported it to a local veterinarian for evaluation.
