Fire at Branford quarry prompts evacuation

BRANFORD — Branford police say a fire at a quarry has prompted an evacuation order because explosives are nearby.
Capt. Geoffrey Morgan says there are no reports of injuries. He says the half mile evacuation order is precautionary.
Morgan says the fire broke out Thursday afternoon on Quarry Road in the Stony Creek section of Branford. He says some rubber blasting mats caught fire.
He says the explosives are for quarry blasting.
The cause of the fire was unclear.
