Griswold man arrested for stealing storm drain covers

Griswold — State police arrested a Jewett City man Monday who they say stole more than 60 storm drain covers from residential streets in the towns of Griswold, Lisbon and Plainfield.

Jeremy Gileau, 25, of 34 Phillips St. was charged with first-degree larceny, second-degree larceny and two counts of reckless endangerment in connection with the Griswold and Lisbon thefts. State police said they expect Plainfield police to lodge additional charges against Gileau for the thefts that occurred in that town.

The thefts occurred early last month. The Jewett City resident state troopers interviewed Gileau, who they say confessed to stealing the drain covers.

Replacing the storm drain covers cost the towns thousands of dollars, and the thefts put the public who live on and pass through the streets in danger, since these openings were left uncovered, state police said.

Gileau posted a $1,500 nonsurety bond and is scheduled to appear Feb. 20 in Norwich Superior Court.
