Police: Norwich man steals car, leads police in pursuit through several towns

A Taftville man was charged with motor vehicle theft and reckless driving, among other charges, after he led Norwich and state police in a pursuit through several towns with a stolen vehicle on Sunday night, according to police.

State police noticed Kyron M. Sands, 34, driving a car in Groton that had been reported stolen from Gales Ferry, according to a state police report. Sands did not pull over when police attempted to stop him, and they followed him from Groton to North Stonington.

At one point in the chase, Norwich police said, a female passenger jumped out of the vehicle. Norwich police stopped to assist her with minor injuries.

Sands later lost control of the vehicle and struck a tree in Hopkinton, R.I., according to the report, at which point he abandoned the car and ran away. State police said they used a K-9 to track Sands and found him hiding in the woods behind a house in North Stonington. He was arrested after a minor struggle, according to the report.

State police charged Sands with improper use of a registration or license, failure to keep plates readable, failure to carry a license, reckless driving, disobeying an officer's signal, making an improper turn, first-degree larceny, interfering with an officer and second-degree reckless endangerment.

Norwich police charged Sands with failure to obey an officer's signal, reckless driving and engaging an officer in pursuit.
