Suspect in Saturday night robbery at large after Norwich police chase, shoot at him

Norwich — Police are looking for a man who robbed a Bridge Street deli Saturday night and fled while officers shot at him.

A Norwich officer, Anthony Marceau, was responding to another call at about 10:50 p.m. when he found an armed man robbing a clerk at Harry’s Occum Deli at 1 Bridge St. in the Occum section of the city.

Police said the man took cash from the store and fled while Marceau chased him, ignoring Marceau’s command to drop the gun he was carrying. The man continued to run onto Main Street in Sprague, just over a mile from the deli. More officers joined the chase and two fired at him when he continued to ignore their commands and pointed his gun at them.

Police didn’t appear to hit the suspect when they shot at him, Norwich Police Sgt. Peter B. Camp said in a news release. The suspect pointed his weapon at the officers, Camp said.

Police surrounded Main Street and Church Street in Sprague, along with police and K-9 teams from state police and Waterford police. They searched nearby homes and wooded areas but did not find him, Camps said.

The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 5 feet, 9 inches tall. He was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and a dark colored mask covering his face.

Police asked anyone with information about the incident to contact Detective Harrison Formiglio at (860) 886-5561 ext. 3137, or by email at hformiglio@cityofnorwich.org.
