State police, AAA urge smart driving for Super Bowl Sunday

As Super Bowl Sunday draws near, state police and AAA are reminding those traveling somewhere to watch the game to do so safely.

State police, who said Super Bowl Sunday can be one of the year’s most dangerous driving days, are going to be on the lookout for impaired driving before and after the game, which starts at 6:30 p.m.

Last year, police arrested 15 people for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and issued 424 tickets for various moving violations.

Police urged people who are drinking to designate a sober driver or call a taxi or arrange another form of transportation. Officials also suggested those who are hosting parties should be prepared to do the same for their guests.

AAA offered similar tips, including some geared for party hosts, such as cutting off the alcohol supply at the end of the third quarter and switching to coffee at that time.

“While people are focusing on who will win or lose, AAA wants to remind drivers that there is something much more important at stake — a loss of life,” AAA spokesperson Amy Parmenter said in a news release. “Plan in advance to pass the keys to a designated driver.”

Police reminded residents that football pools are legal in the state as long as all of the money taken in for the pool is given back to the winners who participated in it. It's not legal for the person who organized the pool to take a cut for the time he or she spent organizing the pool.
