Crews fix water main break at Williams Park Apartments

New London — Crews from a private contractor worked on Wednesday to fix a water main break at Williams Park Apartments, the high-rise for seniors and disabled residents at 127 Hempstead St.

Fire Battalion Chief Tom Curcio said the break was reported about 7 a.m. Wednesday, and crews began working on the break about 10 a.m. He said it was repaired around 8 p.m., earlier than had been expected.

There was no domestic water to the building while it was being repaired, he said, but no residents were displaced.

The property is owned and managed by the New London Housing Authority. It has about 120 tenants in 99 units.

Housing Authority interim Executive Director Lee Erdmann said Wednesday evening that the Thames Valley Council for Community Action provided meals to eight residents at the senior center at lunchtime, and 18 meals were brought back to 127 Hempstead St. for dinner.

The Red Cross provided 500 bottles of water and the Housing Authority purchased 100, he added.

Curcio said he did not know what caused the break.
