New London police make arrest in liquor store assault, attempted robbery

New London -- Police charged a juvenile boy Sunday morning with assaulting an employee of the Liquor Closet at 279 Broad St. on Sept. 26.

The juvenile was charged with criminal attempt to commit first-degree robbery, second-degree assault and criminal attempt to commit sixth-degree larceny. The juvenile was then transported to the Juvenile Detention Center in Hartford.

Police said that at 7:12 p.m. on Sept. 26 they responded to the Liquor Closet for a report of a male who entered and assaulted a store employee after a "verbal exchange" over an identification, and then fled.

The suspect was described as a young black male, possibly between the ages of 17-20, wearing a camouflage jacket and khaki shorts. Police investigated and obtained an arrest warrant for the juvenile. On Sunday, at approximately 11:14 a.m., police said they arrested the juvenile in the area of Huntington and Jay streets.
