Stonington police identify alleged drunk driver who drove into river

Stonington — Police have identified the alleged drunk driver who drove his car into the Pawcatuck River early New Year’s Day as a Providence, R.I., man.

Andreas B. Barbero, 23, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and reckless driving after he was helped from the river by a man standing behind the Malted Barley bar in Westerly. The narrow Pawcatuck River divides the downtown areas of Pawcatuck and Westerly.

Police said they administered field sobriety tests at the scene and then arrested Barbero, who was not injured. He was held on bond and was slated to be arraigned Wednesday in New London Superior Court.

Police said that Barbero was speeding down Coggswell Street at 12:20 a.m., when he drove over an embankment at the end of the street and into the river. Barbero was able to get out of the car and the man behind the Malted Barley helped him to the shore on the Westerly side of the river.

Barbero’s car had not been located as of Wednesday afternoon but police said it is thought to possibly be in the area of the Bridge Restaurant & Bar in Westerly. The Coast Guard and state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection were notified.
