Police: Groton man assaulted officers responding to domestic incident

Groton — Town police on Tuesday arrested a 30-year-old Groton man who they say kicked two officers responding to a report of a family violence incident.

According to the police report, officers arrived at a Groton City residence to investigate the incident, which reportedly had occurred at a hotel in Groton Town, and learned that a juvenile victim had been assaulted and strangled by his mother's boyfriend over an issue with dinner. The suspect also threatened to assault the mother.

Police said the suspect, later identified as Emanuel Roman of 8 Mather Ave., denied that anything had happened and appeared intoxicated and provided a false name and birthdate. However, a witness confirmed the events and officers found injuries on the victim that were consistent with being grabbed by the neck.

According to the police report, officers then placed Roman under arrest, but he resisted and kicked two officers in the chest, face and knee as they tried to place him in a patrol vehicle. The two officers suffered minor injuries, the report said.

On the way to the police headquarters, Roman kicked the doors of the police cruiser and damaged the vehicle, according to the police report. He then threatened to assault the officers while they were placing him in the cell block at the headquarters.

Roman was charged with second-degree breach of peace, third-degree assault, two counts of risk of injury to a minor, second-degree strangulation, first-degree unlawful restraint, three counts of second-degree threatening, two counts of assault of a police officer, interfering with an officer, first-degree criminal mischief, criminal impersonation and second-degree failure to appear in court. He was held on a $50,000 bond and presented in court on Wednesday.

Groton City police officers assisted with the case, according to the police report.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call Groton Town police at (860) 441-6712.
