Firefighters fight dumpster blaze at Waterford Transfer Station

Waterford — Firefighters from three companies contained a blaze to the roll-off dumpster where it started at the Waterford Transfer Station on Tuesday morning, Cohanzie Public Information Officer Steven Frischling said.

Frischling said the aluminum dumpster, which caught fire just after 10 a.m., was half-full with household materials. Cohanzie, Oswegatchie and Jordan firefighters fought the flames, then emptied the melted dumpster’s contents and hosed them down to prevent re-ignition.

The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection responded to the 1000 Hartford Turnpike station and found no hazardous materials had run into the drain, Frischling said.

Goshen and Quaker Hill firefighters were standing by, should another fire arise nearby. No one was injured.

    The fire marshal is investigating.
