Groton — An hours-long search for a man fitting the description of the suspect in a weekend stabbing in Stonington ended Monday afternoon without an arrest.

Police determined that the man they found at 4:15 p.m. was not the suspect wanted in the stabbing. Police had spent two and a half hours searching the Poquonnock Road and Plaza Court area, acting on a tip from someone who called Groton Town Police and said the suspect was possibly in possession of a knife.

Groton Town Police were assisted by Connecticut State Police as well as the Waterford, Groton City, state Environmental Conservation, Amtrak and Stonington police departments.

Police had established a perimeter around the area which they then searched using dog teams. As a precautionary measure, area schools and day care facilities were notified and placed on lockdown and police officers assisted with the dismissal of students from the Catherine Kolnaski STEAM Magnet School. Area residents were notified through a recorded phone message of police activity in the area and to notify police of any suspicious activity.

Groton Town police were searching for Carlton T. Henderson, 44, of 77 Mechanic St., Apt.1, Pawcatuck, the man wanted in connection with a stabbing a woman Saturday morning in Pawcatuck. The woman suffered life-threatening injuries and was flown by Life Star helicopter from Westerly Hospital to Yale New Haven Hospital where she is being treated.

Stonington police said Henderson was last seen driving a tan 2005 Nissan Maxima with Connecticut plate AL73560. Police are asking anyone with information on his whereabouts to call them at (860) 599-4411.
