Preston house fire displaces family of four

Preston — A house fire on Route 164 in Preston on Saturday afternoon has displaced a family of four. There were no injuries.

Called in about 3:45 p.m. at 48 Preston Plains Road, or Route 164, the fire, which began in a partition between the home's garage and living room, quickly spread to the attic, Preston Fire Chief Tom Casey said. When fire crews arrived, flames were visible from the road before they were knocked down 15 to 20 minutes later.

Casey said that though the fire did not completely destroy the home, it caused severe damage and the home is now "uninhabitable."

The cause of the fire still is under investigation, Casey said.

The Preston City, Poquetanuck and Norwich fire departments responded to the scene, as well as North Stonington Ambulance.
