Police: 3 East Lyme officers injured in struggle with driver

East Lyme — Three East Lyme police officers were injured when they say a man drove away during a motor vehicle stop and resisted arrest after he crashed into a parked vehicle.

The injuries did not require hospitalization, police said.

According to the police report, at 3 p.m. Wednesday, officers stopped a vehicle on Main Street at Pennsylvania Avenue for a moving violation. The driver gave a falsified Florida driver's license, and when officers asked him to leave the vehicle, he instead restarted it.

Police said they "attempted to physically stop him from placing the vehicle into gear" and tried to remove him from the vehicle. Instead, he "was able to place the vehicle into drive and accelerated, causing two Officers to fall into the roadway." Another officer, who was on the passenger side as the driver began to flee, was stuck in the vehicle and physically assaulted by the driver, police said.

The driver traveled about 500 feet before crashing into a parked vehicle.

While officers tried to remove the driver from the vehicle, he continued to physically resist, at one point grabbing an officer's stun gun, the report said. The report said that, after a brief struggle, the officers were able to remove the driver and take him into custody.

A search of the driver's fingerprints revealed he had an extraditable warrant from New York state on violation of parole charges related to a firearm offense.

Dwayne Denton, 37, of 68 Connecticut Ave., No. 2, New London, was charged with being a fugitive from justice, criminal impersonation, three counts of assault on an officer, interfering with an officer, possession of marijuana and passing on the right.

Police said he was held on $150,000 bond and is scheduled to appear Thursday at the Geographical Area 10 Courthouse in New London.

Groton Town police provided K-9 unit assistance with the investigation, according to the report.
