Old Saybrook police arrest four and seize drugs after attempted fraud at car dealership

Old Saybrook ― Police arrested four people when Shoreline Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM prevented a $100,000 fraud Friday, according to a news release from Old Saybrook police. Authorities are still investigating, and police have not yet released the names of those arrested or charges.

People posing as customers stole the identity of an out-of-state resident to generate fraudulent government documents and pose as customers, police said. They left a cash deposit at a dealership and said they would return.

But people from the car dealership alerted Old Saybrook police of a possible fraudulent transaction that could happen later, and so when the people returned, police were waiting.

Police seized from their vehicles a loaded handgun with a high-capacity magazine, methamphetamine, ecstasy, crack cocaine, and documents linking the four people to identity theft.

“We take our role to safeguard our customer’s information very seriously,” dealership co-owner Alex Castergini Jr said in the news release. He and co-owner Kobe Tremblay have pledged to sponsor a law enforcement-led theft prevention seminar in the beginning of the new year.
