Ledyard police nab New York man after he almost runs down officers during chase

Ledyard ― Police say an intoxicated Long Island man who almost ran down several police officers led police on a multi-town chase beginning at the Cross Sound Ferry terminal in New London Thursday afternoon.

Police said they charged Robert L. Lechner, 55, of Greenport, N.Y, with criminal attempt to commit first-degree assault, criminal attempt to commit assault on a peace officer, reckless driving, and engaging police in pursuit. He is expected to face additional charges from police departments in Groton City, Groton Town and New London.

In a press release, Ledyard police said they heard an area-wide broadcast from New London police around 1:06 p.m. about a man in a Chevrolet pickup truck towing a trailer. Police said the man sped away from responding officers at the landing at 2 Ferry St., “nearly striking the officers and others in the area.”

Ledyard police attempted to stop the truck on Wolf Ridge Gap after spotting it on Route 117 in Ledyard Center. They said the truck came to a stop in the cul-de-sac before accelerating toward an approaching officer, “nearly striking him.”

Police said the chase continued with the truck accelerating to high speeds as it traveled south on Colonel Ledyard Highway, to Route 184, and west toward Interstate 95.

“All surrounding agencies were alerted and Groton Town and Groton City Police also responded to assist,” police said. “The vehicle continued through Groton Center and onto Poquonnock Road.”

Ledyard police used stop sticks to bring the vehicle to a stop on Mirra Drive in Groton.

Police said Lechner struggled briefly with officers at the time of arrest and he was placed on the ground for handcuffing. He was transported to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital for evaluation and treatment of minor injuries.

Police are holding him on a $150,000 bond pending a court appearance in New London Superior Court. If Lechner, who is also wanted by Mohegan Tribal police on a first-degree larceny charge, does not post bond he will be arraigned on Friday.
