UPDATED: Man charged with stealing more than $20K in town equipment from East Lyme

East Lyme―Police on Monday arrested a Hebron man on charges he stole a wood chipper and two landscaping trailers from the town.

William H. Patterson-Hatem, 22, with a last known address in Hebron, was charged with first-degree larceny and third-degree criminal trespass. The charge of first-degree larceny is a felony and indicates the theft was of property valued at more than $20,000.

Police said the thefts occurred over the course of several days last April from the town Public Works building on Capitol Drive.

Police served Patterson-Hatem with an arrest warrant at New London Superior Court on Monday after he was transported there from the Garner Correction Institution where he is serving a six-month sentence on charges that included the attempted theft of a state police cruiser in Hebron, published reports show. Court records show he also has pending first- and third-degree larceny charges stemming from an arrest in Manchester last year.

Patterson-Hatem was held on a $50,000 court set bond in the latest case. Records from the state Department of Correction show his current prison sentence is set to expire Saturday.

Editor’s note: This version clarifies that Patterson-Hatem continues to serve a prison sentence on a previous conviction.
