Waterford ― Reports of an erratic driver on Interstate 95 led to a police chase and the arrest of an Essex man on drunken driving charges on Tuesday.

Kevin Harris, 43, of Essex, faces charges of engaging an officer in pursuit, disobeying the signal of an officer, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, interfering with a police officer and failure to maintain the proper lane.

At 9:39 p.m. Tuesday, state police said they fielded multiple 911 calls about an erratic driver traveling south on I-95, over the Gold Star Bridge. State police said they caught up with Harris’ car near Exit 82 in Waterford. Police said Harris tried to flee but was eventually boxed in by police and brought to a controlled stop.

Harris then tried to flee the traffic stop by maneuvering his car around state police vehicles and then fought with police when he was taken out of his car in the right lane of the highway, police said.

Harris was held on a $10,000 bond pending his arraignment Wednesday in New London Superior Court.
