Tree crashes into home in New London, displaces 10

New London ― At least 10 people were displaced on Wednesday after a tree fell on a home at 55 Jay St. causing serious damage.

Firefighters responded at 6:45 a.m. to find a large tree had toppled onto the home and caused significant structural damage, New London Fire Battalion Chief Mark Waters said in a statement. The home is expected to be condemned.

No injuries were reported and firefighters helped residents who were still inside to get out. Waters said 10 people lived in the home.

Eversource was called to disconnect electricity and natural gas to the building. The Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents.

An adjacent commercial building at 49 Jay St. also sustained damage to its roof from the fallen tree.

Public records show 55 Jay St. is owned by the estate of William Thompson. The 55 Jay St. home was to be sold at a public foreclosure auction scheduled for noon on April 22, according to a sign posted at the front of the home.
