Reports of gunfire prompt lockdown at Norwich schools

Norwich ― Two schools were briefly placed in lockdown on Thursday as police investigated reports of shots fired in the area of 3 Sullivan Drive.

Norwich Police Lt. John Perry said John B. Stanton Elementary and Teachers’ Memorial Global Studies Magnet Middle School were placed in a lockdown at about 12:30 p.m. because of the close proximity to the reports of gunfire.

Police said a man called 911 to say he was in the woods near Sullivan Drive when a single shot was fired near him. He ran home and called police when he heard someone knocking on his door.

Police said no suspects have been located.

The lockdown was lifted by 1 p.m. and both schools were placed in a "hold all students" protocol, which restricts access in and out of the schools. All restrictions were lifted by 1:56 p.m. and the schools resumed normal activity, police said. Extra police officers were stationed at both schools as a precaution.

Police said the case remains under investigation. No injuries were reported.

Anyone with information about the case should contact Det. Steve Callender at 860-886-5561 ext. 3154, or call the Norwich Police Tip Line at ext. 4.
