New London firefighters rescue man whose car went down embankment

New London ― Firefighters early Thursday rescued a man trapped in a car that had traveled down an embankment off Huntington Street.

The accident occurred around 4:15 a.m. in the area of the New London Homeless Hospitality Center. New London Battalion Chief Jeffrey Rheaume said it wasn’t the driver who called, but someone else who said a car went into the bushes and the horn was blowing.

Firefighters said they arrived to find the car down an embankment and unstable because of the terrain. Firefighters stabilized the car with a hoist ― a large metal cable attached to the fire truck ― and the driver was removed from the car with a stokes basket.

Rheaume said the driver was conscious the entire time and was taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital. He didn’t know the nature or extent of injuries but said they were non-life-threatening.

Rheaume said there were no passengers in the car and no other vehicles involved.
