Deaths of Norwich mother and daughter ruled accidental

Sprague ― An autopsy has confirmed that a Norwich woman and her young daughter drowned in the Shetucket River in Sprague on Tuesday.

The state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has ruled the deaths of Kelly Dora, 39, and her daughter, 5-year-old Aralye McKeever, to be accidental. State police said the two were swept down river on Tuesday by fast-moving currents in a river swollen by recent rains. Dora’s 8-year-old son watched the events unfold from the riverbank, one witness said.

Police and fire personnel were called out to the area of Park Drive in the Baltic section of town at 5:25 p.m. Tuesday, responding to reports of a possible drowning and missing person. Firefighters pulled Dora, McKeever and a state trooper from the water. The state trooper had jumped into the water to rescue the two, fire officials said.

Dora and McKeever were unconscious and treated on a dive team boat before being taken to the hospital. Police said Dora was pronounced dead at Backus Hospital in Norwich. McKeever was taken to the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford, where she was pronounced dead Wednesday.
