Search resumes for missing New London teen swimmer

Westerly — A search resumed on Friday morning for a 15-year-old boy from New London who went missing Thursday while swimming at a Westerly, R.I., beach.

Westerly Police Chief Paul Gingerella said because of an extensive but unsuccessful search for the teen on Thursday evening, Friday’s activities are focused on recovery.

The 15-year-old was with a large group of family members and swimming near a jetty at Dunes Park Beach at 665 Atlantic Ave. Thursday evening, when he went missing, Gingerella said.

Police were called at 7:15 p.m. when Westerly police and the U.S.Coast Guard joined a multi-agency search effort that brought in boats and divers from police and fire departments from Connecticut and Rhode Island. The Coast Guard additionally used a helicopter to search the water on Thursday evening and throughout the night.

Gingerella said the water was choppy and there were not life guards on duty at the time the teen went missing. He declined to release the name of the missing teen.
